What you need to know

  • Never skimp on padding. Just as the rug protects the floor, the padding protects the rug, keeping it smooth and wrinkle-free and without rolls. Be sure to always ask the flooring expert what he or she recommends

  • You can have carpet if you have allergies or asthma. We’re always amazed when people walk into our showroom saying “I love it, but unfortunately I can’t have it since I have allergies and asthma.” Here’s the bottom-line: Unlike sweeping, which can cause the particles to become airborne, the rug’s fibers trap them where they will remain until they are scrubbed out deeply with professional cleaning.

  • You need professional cleaning. Those DIY machines you see in supermarkets and hardware stores don’t have the kind of power the professionals have--not to mention you don’t even know if they are working correctly. Vacuuming is terrific and you should do it several times a week, but it only gets the surface dirt. And, yes, you still need to do it even if you think the carpet is too new to accumulate dirt.

  • Carpet needs to be professionally installed. Some flooring can be a DIY project, but this isn’t one of them. It requires special skills and tools and, like any investment, you want to keep it looking great for a long time. Also, note that warranties can be voided if it isn’t installed to their specifications.

Please know that they’re not all the same, even if they look similar. There are different fibers, piles, and styles and they all behave somewhat differently. What may be good for one room installation can be not-so-great for another, and stairs have their requirements altogether.
